Hi

My son uses a 100Gb Lacie Porche USB/Firewire external harddrive coupled to his Laptop PC (Windows XP Pro). Suddenly it has become impossible to mount, and is only clicking. He has loads of films and pictures and game downloads on it. Obviously, none of it of high value, but important to him.

Could you give me an indication of what recovery of his data might cost?

Many thanks

I think we should start a class action suit in court against Seagate and Apple who put some in their machines.

In fact am getting pretty determind to make a film about it as I lost 5 years worth of my work and business and the first drive and a backup drive!

They have known there was a problem with this drive for sometime and not informed anyone they should protect their data!

If you want bring Seagate to Justice there is a US based lawyer who is starting a suit because of another hard drive issue.

Get in touch with me. Join together and see justice done!

Hi,
There are various problems with Seagate 7200 drives. Some are electronic faults and others are firmware related. We have had a lot of success with recovering data from these drives. Please use the contact form on the right if you would like us to have a look at it for you.

Hello,

I own a Seagate Barracuda 7200 1TB drive that runs inside my Powermac G5.

The drive has been running fine up until last night. The computer was put on sleep mode, then this morning it wouldn't wake up. Tried restarting the machine a few times, and each time all I got was the \?\ blinking mac folder over a grey screen.

At first I figured it could be a damaged OSX file or some other hardware problem (bad ram or something), so I hooked up another hard drive with osx on it, and moved the seagate drive to the secondary drive slot. The computer booted up just fine, but the seagate drive will NOT mount at all. The computer wont even show it in the disk utility.

What can I do?

Hi Scott,
We have seen a number of firmware issues with those types of drive. We have a good success rate with them and they are usually recoverable in our Stage 1 process.

Let me know if you want to send it down to us. Our contact details are on the right-hand side.

Hi,
If the drive has been dropped onto a hard surface then there are two likely problems. The first is a seized motor, however this wouldn't usually make the drive click. The other possibility is that the read/write heads may have hit the disc surface. When this happens, it can sometimes simply damage the head, which we will need to replace. Other times, it damages the disc media too, which would leave it unrecoverable.
