Hi,
There are various problems with Seagate 7200 drives. Some are electronic faults and others are firmware related. We have had a lot of success with recovering data from these drives. Please use the contact form on the right if you would like us to have a look at it for you.

Hello,

I own a Seagate Barracuda 7200 1TB drive that runs inside my Powermac G5.

The drive has been running fine up until last night. The computer was put on sleep mode, then this morning it wouldn't wake up. Tried restarting the machine a few times, and each time all I got was the \?\ blinking mac folder over a grey screen.

At first I figured it could be a damaged OSX file or some other hardware problem (bad ram or something), so I hooked up another hard drive with osx on it, and moved the seagate drive to the secondary drive slot. The computer booted up just fine, but the seagate drive will NOT mount at all. The computer wont even show it in the disk utility.

What can I do?

Hi Scott,
We have seen a number of firmware issues with those types of drive. We have a good success rate with them and they are usually recoverable in our Stage 1 process.

Let me know if you want to send it down to us. Our contact details are on the right-hand side.

Hi,
If the drive has been dropped onto a hard surface then there are two likely problems. The first is a seized motor, however this wouldn't usually make the drive click. The other possibility is that the read/write heads may have hit the disc surface. When this happens, it can sometimes simply damage the head, which we will need to replace. Other times, it damages the disc media too, which would leave it unrecoverable.

Hi Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 500GB - dropped it :-( whilst moving it from the car to the house. It now spins up but makes a clicking sound when I turn the device on.

Can you advise if you can recover from this type of problem?

Thanks

Hi Ally,
It's definitely something we should be able to overcome. It wouldn't be a straightforward PCB swap due to the unique information stored on the PCB. We can read that ROM information from the damaged PCB and write to a new replacement.

For data recovery costs click here.

Barracuda 7200.8 SATA : ST3250823AS

Capacity: 250.0 GB
Speed: 7200 rpm
Average Read Time: 8 ms
Cylinders: 16383
Heads: 16
Sectors: 63

SATA SIGNAL CONNECTERS ON BACK OF HARD DRIVE ARE DAMAGED CAN THE DRIVE BE REPAIRED SO I CAN GET ACCESS TO THE DATA ON IT? IF SO HOW MUCH WOULD IT COST TO FIX?

THANKS

I would suspect you have at least damaged the PCB. There is also the possibility of damage to some of the more delicate internal components.

There is no chance of a simple PCB swap, as some parameters will need to be extracted from the original PCB and written to a replacement.

We can carry out this sort of work. If you would like further details then please visit our website or contact us on 0845 200 9241.
